Are Rabbit Ears the TV Technology of Tomorrow?

$

In the world of consumer electronics, we often talk about “disruptive” technologies – innovative new products or services that come along, seemingly out of the blue, and forever change or modify the way we live our technological lives. The iPhone is an oft-used example, in that it not only changed the mobile phone market, but also the way we communicate and consume entertainment, but also the way we control our homes.

At an industry talk this past week titled “Technology Today/Tomorrow,” though, consumer electronics industry marketing consultant, author and journalist Michael Heiss made the interesting point that one of the most critical disruptive technologies in recent history is one you might never expect: the rabbit-ear antenna. Yes, I’m talking about the old dome-shaped hunk of plastic that sits above or behind your TV, with two extendable metal rods, designed to yank free TV out of the airwaves and deliver them to your screen.

Mr. Heiss was referring to a dispute between Time Warner Cable and CBS earlier this year, in which the latter blocked the former’s customers from receiving its programming in several major markets as a result of financial disputes. Time Warner Cable’s first inclination was to send its customers to CBS.com to catch up on their favorite shows while the two companies resolved their differeces, but within days even that option was blocked for TWC subscribers.

The ingenious solution? Time Warner Cable offered subscribers in its largest markets free rabbit ears. And the move was such a resounding success that they quickly ran out of antennas.

It seems counterintuitive. Downright anachronistic, in fact. And it’s certainly a change of pace from the days when cable companies were offering a free year of basic cable to entice potential customers who were still holding onto rabbit ears. But as Heiss pointed out in his talk, a good antenna and free over-the-air broadcasts actually have the potential to deliver better picture quality and a more reliable (not to mention free) TV signal than what you’re used to receiving from your local cable or satellite provider. Because, unlike the old analog days of snowy, ghosting over-the-air signals, with high-definition broadcasts the image is either perfect or it’s unwatchable. There really isn’t any middle ground.

That fact is a double-edged sword, though. Whereas in the old analog days you could at least tune into distant, snow-plagued TV stations to catch the World Series – after all, something is better than nothing when it comes to that can’t-miss game – tuning in to HDTV via a set of rabbit ears is an all-or-nothing affair. And rabbit ears may not suffice at all depending on your local geography and broadcast market. You may need one of those big, multi-veined rooftop antennas that positively defined the silhouette of suburbia a generation or two ago.

If you’re tempted by the notion of receiving picture-perfect HDTV broadcasts without paying a monthly bill, though, and don’t want to gamble on potentially buying the wrong antenna for your home or local terrain, there are a couple of resources at your disposal. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) have developed a website called AntennaWeb.org, which allows you to plug in your home address, peruse a list of free over-the-air stations available to you, and even gives you recommendations on which types of antennas will work best for your location.

But as Time Warner Cable strongly hinted at on its website, your safest bet may be to contact a home technology specialist in your area who has experience with the installation and setup of over-the-air antennas, and who can work with you to ensure that one of the oldest surviving video technologies works best with your modern video entertainment system.

Demanding Decisions: Which Video-On-Demand Device Is Right For You?

Want to watch Goodfellas or catch the entire library of Downton Abbey before the new season airs? With all the various video-on-demand (VOD) devices now available, that’s incredibly easy to do. All you need is the proper hardware, a reliable network and a home entertainment system to enjoy it all on. The problem is there are several devices out there, making choosing a VOD source complicated. This short guide will help you navigate some of the more popular options out there and get you on the road to instantly enjoying any movie or show you can think of…from the comfort of your couch.

Apple TV® with 1080p
One of the most popular VOD services around, Apple TV is a logical choice for anyone who is already using iTunes® or iOS devices. Apple TV not only lets you rent and buy movies and shows, but you can access your Netflix™ account, use Hulu Plus™, scour YouTube™ and Vimeo™, view photos from PhotoStream or play music and movies from your own library on the big screen via Apple AirPlay®. Apple TV seamlessly brings together third-party online content providers, iTunes content and personal content stored on other devices for an intuitive and fun experience. Want to play Angry Birds on the big screen? Now you can thanks to Apple TV’s ‘mirroring’ capabilities. Simply put, mirroring lets you show exactly what’s on your iPad®, Mac®, iPhone® or iPod touch® screen on your TV. Whether it’s a video, game, web page, or spreadsheet, whatever is on the device will appear on the TV screen. Of course, if you are a Google Play™ user or have an Android™ device, you’ll want to check out Google Chromecast™ instead.

Google Chromecast
This new device looks like a USB drive and plugs into the back of your TV. It doesn’t come with a remote, and therefore must be controlled by an Android or iPhone or by using the Google Chrome™ browser from your Mac, PC or Chromebook™. One unique feature is that it lets multiple users queue YouTube videos, eliminating the repetitive search and play tedium, which can interrupt the fun. Chromecast is new, so content streaming directly from the Internet to the device is not as comprehensive as on Roku’s or Apple’s wares, but it’s likely to catch up.

Roku®Streaming Player
Roku’s streaming devices are able to access the largest array of content of any of the VOD/streaming devices with a few caveats. Roku supports more than 750 channels of content, including Netflix, HBO Go®, Vudu™, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video and more. Where some devices don’t support other streaming music services like Pandora® and Spotify®, Roku does. It also conveniently lets you search content across platforms, so whether you are looking to watch Game of Thrones on Netflix or HBO Go, searching is a piece of cake. As for those caveats: Roku doesn’t offer a wireless solution for accessing content stored on other devices. You have to use the USB port or microSD slot to upload content. And if YouTube is important to you, think twice—Roku doesn’t support it.

Built-in VOD
If you are in the market for a new TV, several manufacturers are building the VOD functionality into the TV itself rather than requiring an outboard media player. These TVs let you download apps to access content that you want, such as YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. If you are considering a smart TV, check out the specs to see what VOD services and apps are available to make sure your preferred content providers are supported. We can help you make the right decision for you.

Whatever your needs are, VOD is here to stay and it’s incredibly convenient and fun for the whole family. We encourage you to come in or call today to get started with a VOD device in your own home and start watching all the content you love, whenever you want!

Get Rock Star Audio in Your Media Room

$

When you watch TV, are you frantically pressing the volume control button up and down? One minute an explosion onscreen assaults your ears and threatens to wake the kids; the next, you’re straining to hear dialogue. That’s because the speakers included in today’s TV sets are compulsory but inadequate at best. Now that the excitement of flat-panel TVs has worn off, people like you are ready to begin considering the audio portion of the equation, and manufacturers are responding with entirely new breeds of speakers designed to provide a more robust audio system in your living or media room.

Horizontal sound bars that you can mount below your TV, sound bases that are designed to sit underneath your TV, and wireless speakers are all great design solutions. Some of them even sound great. But for that you-are-there experience, nothing can beat a high-quality surround sound speaker system. Here’s why:

The ‘you are there’ effect
Some all-in-one speakers offer simulated (aka “virtual”) surround sound. While you can get a decent approximation from some of the higher-end models available, it doesn’t compare to real speakers surrounding you with dedicated information going to each speaker (or channel). This means that effects—like rain for example—actually come from the side and rear speakers, totally immersing you in the moment. The result is an experience that actually suspends disbelief and envelopes you in the action. It’s one of those things you’ll want to show off to friends.

Unbelievable explosions
While many sound bars come with a separate subwoofer, other all-in-one speakers neglect this important channel. The subwoofer provides the low-frequency effects to the room—the bass that makes you feel those deep notes and explosions. In a surround system, a subwoofer gets its own spot in the home entertainment system and on the receiver or amplifier—and often two spots for bigger rooms—giving your system the oomph it needs to create killer audio.

More pep in its step
Many all-in-one speakers act as the receiver or amplifier, meaning that they have to try to squeeze all the power you’d get from one of these standalone components into a much smaller and more lightweight package. They simply can’t, making an all-in-one speaker—especially one on the lower end—sound anemic when compared with a full surround system. With a dedicated receiver or amplifier, speakers will easily fill your room with sound, while not overpowering.

Wired and wireless wonders
Wireless speakers are all the rage these days for their convenience factor, giving the consumer even more options when it comes to creating an out-of-this-world home theater experience. Wireless speakers are great design solutions for those who don’t want to run speaker wires from their entertainment system all over their living room or break into drywall to run them inside the walls. You simply need a reliable wireless network to support them, especially if you have a lot of other streaming devices, like a tablet or networked computers. Wired surround speakers do require speaker wire, but don’t rely on a network to send information, meaning they are incredibly dependable. Either way, make sure you get a demonstration before you buy. We’ll be happy to show you a few options that will fulfill your needs.

Step it up
If you’re now convinced surround sound is the way to go in your media room, you’ll want to consider getting speakers that are up to the task, as not all surround sound systems are created equal. There is a wide range of quality and capability out there, but the question is: What is best for you and your home? Take the time to demo some different systems. Also remember that when it comes to speakers, it’s usually a case of  ‘you get what you pay for.’ That doesn’t mean you have to break the bank, however. There are plenty of excellent midlevel systems that will do a bang-up job in the living room. We welcome you to come in for a bona fide surround sound experience coming at you from all sides…and from high-quality speakers. When you hear the difference, you’ll regret that you’ve been missing it all along.

Hot Technology Trends for Your Home

The words “trade” and “show” when spoken together usually evoke yawns from those who have never been to one or memories of aching feet for those who have. However, the annual CEDIA Expo (put on by the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) is special because it spotlights products and technologies that go well beyond what you can find at your local big box store. The CEDIA Expo eschews the “dog and pony show” and marketing hype in favor of new products that help integrators provide a complete, cohesive experience in your home. After traversing several football fields worth of product over several days, here are some of the most notable tech trends we found.

More (and more affordable) 4K
4K projectors popped up here and there at CEDIA, with a couple manufacturers revamping their projector lines by adding 4K (aka Ultra HD) inputs so that you, the homeowner, can enjoy the increased resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels compared to high-definition’s 1,920 x 1,080) and get an unbelievably good image from the comfort of your armchair. Meanwhile, one major TV manufacturer introduced new 4K sets at 55- and 65-inches that are actually affordable for many, at $3,500 and $5,000 respectively. We’ll keep you posted on new developments in the 4K category as they develop. If you value a great image, you’ll want to come in and demo this technology. Simply breathtaking!

Design (still) reigns supreme
One thing we love about the CEDIA show is that it features not only cutting-edge products, but cutting-edge products that are going to either look spectacular—or be completely invisible—in your home. One lighting and shading company announced the availability of more than 1,500 different fabrics for its motorized shade line, meaning not only will your drapes be automated, they’ll match your decor! Meanwhile, one manufacturer premiered a speaker that looks just like a painting—allowing you to choose from several prints or customize your own. It simply hangs like art whether it is on or off. Even on the outdoor front, design was important. One booth we visited featured speakers in sandstone, greenstone, or give you the ability to customize your own speaker finish for a completely camouflaged look in the backyard.

The outdoor den is the new man cave
Speaking of backyards, it’s no wonder outdoor entertainment was all the rage at CEDIA as homeowners continue to move outside with not only al fresco kitchens, but audio and video systems to boot. These days, dad is not sequestered in his man cave, but enjoying his entertainment outdoors amid children playing and BBQ grilling. One company showed water- and weather-resistant speakers that you can attach to a wall or stake directly into the ground, while burying the subwoofer in the ground for a true surround-sound experience on the patio. We also saw some powerful weatherproof Bluetooth® speakers and some very cool waterproof TVs, not to mention TV enclosures that allow your TV to ascend from its casing when you want to watch it, descend and stay protected when not. How fun would products like these be for an outdoor fall movie night with roasted marshmallows and hot cocoa?

Energy savings a top priority for homeowners
Aside from the more “fun” tech like 4K, aesthetically appealing gear and outdoor AV, there is a serious side to our business as well. We know, for example, that energy usage is a huge concern for our customers. That collective sentiment is reflected in the growing number of companies devoted to the energy-management category with significant real estate given to them on the CEDIA Expo show floor. Most control manufacturers announced solutions that allow homeowners to control and manage their energy usage with real, visual feedback and data on usage. Connected thermostats were tied into energy management, with one manufacturer touting a geo-fence that senses when you leave your home and adjusts your thermostat accordingly. LED lighting was everywhere, with several manufacturers entering the fray for the first time as homeowners transition to lower-cost, highly efficient LED bulbs throughout the home. The good news is that there are so many options available now, you can find LEDs that actually look great in your home.

Keyless entry gains steam
Several first-time exhibitors appeared on the scene touting the latest in keyless entry for the home, some of them tied into remote home-monitoring systems that include other components, such as connected thermostats. One company showed its biometric fingertip-scanning locks, while another uses Z-wave® technology, number codes or Bluetooth to grant access in lieu of the soon-to-be-arcane metal key. It’s confusing to know which option might be right for you and your home, especially now that the lines between security, lighting, climate, automation and AV systems are blurring.

We’d love to show you some of these products firsthand. Come in to our location or give us a call to see how you can make your home safer, more efficient, and more fun!

Save Energy and Money with Connected Climate Control

The dog days of summer are behind us, much to the delight of our overworked air conditioning units and similarly overworked pocketbooks. Now we look forward to the crisp days of FALL and delightfully chilly winter nights. Get your hot cocoa and scarves ready and callous your fingertips for their new winter job—constantly raising and lowering your thermostat.

If the thought of playing yo-yo with your thermostat or standing guard against tinkering family members sends literal shivers down your spine, it’s time to check out the latest craze in home climate control—the connected thermostat. These handy devices are receiving tons of press, not to mention venture capital, and for good reason. They are an excellent way to keep your energy bills fit as a fiddle and keep your home at its most comfortable.

Data analyzers
There are several features to look for when you are selecting a connected thermostat. First, many models feature learning capabilities that analyze data over a period of time to predict trends in temperature preferences. For example, if you leave for work, turn up the thermostat to save energy, then come home and turn it back down, your smart thermostat will remember that and begin to do it for you automatically. If the temperature dips as the sun goes down and you tend to crank the heat, the thermostat will, again, adjust itself based on this pattern. This means that controlling your climate becomes a non-issue. Your thermostat does all of the adjusting for you.

Anytime, anywhere control
You will also want to consider a connected thermostat that you can control wirelessly. Now that the smart phone and tablet serve as veritable remote controls for your home, remote operation of your heating and air conditioning is very affordable—not something you’d only see on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Connected thermostats are super-efficient because you can power down your system altogether when you aren’t at home, then power it back up before you arrive home for the ultimate in energy savings—not to mention a cozy home upon arrival. Better yet, look for a thermostat with GPS capabilities that can actually sense when you are getting close to home and set the temp to your preferred level.

Works well with others
One of the most important features of a connected thermostat is its ability to integrate with the rest of your automation system—either now or in the future. You want your thermostat to have the ability to communicate with other systems and your control interface so they can work together. For example, if you are coming home from a trip at night during a snowstorm, we can automate your home so that when you arrive, the lights are set to predetermined levels, the house is heated to a comfy 73 degrees and the Jacuzzi is nice and hot.

This type of remote functionality can be added to other everyday functions such as your security system or motorized drapes. We’d love to help you get control of your energy bills by installing a climate solution. Just stop in or give us a call— we assure you that a connected thermostat will pay for itself over time!

Is Your System Ready for Next Generation Gaming?

At the time of this writing, PS4™ and Xbox One madness is running rampant with some hardcore gamers waiting up to 18 hours to get their hands on a console. It’s hard not to get swept away in the wave of excitement that is accompanying these consoles, which are in short supply and high demand. Not only are these gaming machines the first to hit the market the last six to seven years, they are positioned as entertainment hubs that handle a vast array of media.

But gaming isn’t just about consoles, with the NPD Group reporting that 72% of gamers in the U.S. are playing online games via PCs and mobile devices, compared with 67% last year. This all begs the question: Why not give games the same respect as our favorite movies and enjoy them on the optimal gaming system? Here are a few tips to get the most out of your gaming experience and to help truly immerse you in the moment.

Don’t Put Up with Sluggish Onscreen Action
The unbelievable graphics on next-gen games make your display all the more important. You’ll need a high-def set, of course, and some sets are even designed with gamers in mind. Look for a dedicated ‘Game’ mode in your TV’s ‘Pictures’ setting, which minimizes or eliminates image processing so you don’t get delays in onscreen action. Don’t opt for the cheapest set you can find, either, which may fall prey to input lag and likewise slow down game play. A quick video calibration is not a bad idea, and we can definitely help with that.

For PC gamers, consider a gaming PC that will give you a better experience overall. These computers offer faster processing, enhanced video and sound cards and are designed with the express purpose of online gaming. We also recommend an ergonomically correct gaming mouse or keyboard, which makes game play easier and less taxing on your digits.

Get Lightning–fast Internet
Most consoles are connected and you will obviously need a fast Internet connection for PC gaming. We recommend a wired connection whenever possible, but if you must game wirelessly, consider a Gigabit router, which can handle the fastest Internet service speeds to sidestep a potentially sluggish connection. Also opt for a dual-band router, which uses two different frequencies—2.4GHz and 5GHz—to send information, as opposed to single-band routers, which use one band only and can become victims of household network traffic.

Immerse Yourself in Audio
Audio for gaming is a balance between playing it loud and not disturbing others. You want to be submerged in the virtual world onscreen, so good speakers or headphones are important. We recommend a full–on 5.1 or greater surround system (with subwoofer) for the very best experience. But then again, if you’re gaming while the family is in the other room, you’ll want to try a little soundproofing so that explosions won’t wake the kids; that, or a great set of gaming headphones with a mic so you can easily talk to your online gaming friends. Sound bars or other all–in–one speakers that offer virtual surround sound are another option if you don’t have the space for a full–on surround system, yet want to have a more encompassing audio experience. We also suggest a receiver that has continuous variable volume control, eliminating dips and peaks in volume and keeping dialogue and explosion at even levels so you aren’t constantly scrambling for the remote. We can help you with any of these solutions, just give us a ring.

Last But Not Least: Accessorize & App-etize
Now that you’ve dialed in your processing, audio, and video for the ultimate in gaming, give a little thought to your environment. For one, a typical gaming session could last anywhere from one hour to several, so a good seat is key. Something like a theater chair will support your neck and spine for extended game play, or try out a gaming chair which offers a sleek design and features like built-in speakers, inputs for headphones, volume and bass control and more.

Finally, we suggest downloading the latest version of your console’s app for your smart phone or tablet, allowing you to stay in touch with your online gaming community even when you are not in front of your system.

Whatever your passion, you’ll get a lot more enjoyment out of them with a few tweaks or upgrades. And because the next-gen consoles are such experts all entertainment—be it music or movies or apps like Skype®—all your media will be the better for it.

What’s At the Top of Your Wish List?

Just like you can ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ over the latest McLaren or Bugatti, there are electronics out there that are works of art in their own right, creating an experience at home that rivals—or even exceeds—the real thing. We’ve compiled a list of the top-six drool–worthy items on our own list. Whether you love movies or music, or just appreciate the finer things in life, there’s something here for everyone.

#1: Go Big or Go Home with an 4K Ultra HD TV or Projector
4K, otherwise known as Ultra HD, is currently the very best picture quality available to the consumer, with resolution four times that of HDTV. Yes, it looks amazing. To really enjoy the benefits of this increased resolution, you need to watch 4K on a big screen. There are 4K projectors now available that allow you to create a big screen cinematic experience in your own home. We guarantee you’ll be impressed!

#2: Get Unparalleled Detail with a Precision Turntable
Nothing digital can really beat the musical quality of a good, old-fashioned turntable, provided you get the right model. Listening to your favorite artists on a turntable, you’ll notice warmth and details you’ve never heard before. You may even realize that you’ve had the lyrics wrong all these years. We’ve seen turntables cost as much as $28,000, with promises of total elimination of troublesome sonic aberrations, but you can get a precision turntable that is far less costly but still sounds incredible.

#3: Optimize Digital Music with a DAC
Don’t want to go analog? Then we suggest a great digital-to-analog converter, which will have a similar effect on musical detail as a turntable by converting digital music to analog. Digital-to-analog converters come in all shapes and sizes these days, with some even plugging into your computers USB port. Others are standalone components. Whatever you opt for, opting for a DAC in general is a wise idea that will garner you far more enjoyment from your digital music collection.

#4: 7.1 (or Greater!) Sound System
Less is sometimes more, but in the case of speakers, more is usually more. That’s why the minimum for home theater audio is a 5.1 system (five speakers and a subwoofer). Add on back left and right channels for a 7.1 channel system, and the action gets even more immersive. Throw in another subwoofer to eliminate standing waves (an acoustic anomaly introduced by using only one subwoofer) and you’re rocking with a 7.2 system. Some serious home theaters use four subwoofers for the ultimate in low-frequency room response. Add three more channels for a 10.2 system—a format created by the founder of THX®—for a truly impressive surround-sound experience. Alas, 10.2 is more of a concept found in commercial IMAX® theaters, though there are some residential 10.2 receivers on the market. Whether you choose five, seven or even 10 speakers one thing is certain, you are sure to impress friends!

#5: Gorgeous Freestanding Speakers
While all the wireless wonders and all–in–one solutions sound great and are wonderful design solutions, traditional floor-standing tower speakers make a dramatic statement in your home or home theater and sound unbelievable—especially if you take our advice in #4. Finishes are available in everything from cherry to glossy piano black to custom colors—like Ferrari red.

#6: Serve It Up with Class
Media players, like Apple TV and Roku®, are the center of attention right now due to the convenience of downloading movies from the Internet at will. However, there is a certain pride of ownership in having your own collection of Blu-ray discs, or—even better—having them stored and accessible via a high–end movie server like the new Kaleidescape Cinema One. Some of the latest models have cool features like upgrading your current DVDs to Blu-ray for a small fee. The carefully engineered user interfaces and ability to tie into a home-automation system are other bonuses.

If you’re interested in any of these elegant solutions, call for a demo or to learn more…or simply drop by to marvel at the art of technology firsthand!

Multi-Screen Madness: Getting the Ultimate Sports Setup

$

We’ve all been there: It’s Sunday and that means football. But if you want to watch the NFL Sunday Ticket and the NHL game, you’ll inevitably end up toggling back and forth between channels and missing out on some of the action. Throw NBA and fantasy football into the mix and suddenly you are trying to catch multiple games, leaving you with carpel tunnel syndrome from playing remote jockey and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. Sure, you could record a game or two on your DVR to watch later, but then you run the risk of glimpsing ‘the spoiler’ via your Twitter feed.

The multi-screen solution
The best solution for these multi-game woes is a multi-screen media wall that allows you to enjoy as many games as you have displays. While some cable and satellite TV channels do offer multiple views of various games onscreen at once, they are not very elegant solutions. For one, games are shrunken so that several will fit on one screen simultaneously.

Multi-screen video walls are the answer for any discerning sports fan, allowing you to enjoy each game in high-definition resolution on a large screen. Some multi-screen walls consist of one larger display in the middle flanked by two or four additional screens, but it’s really up to you how big the displays will be, how they will be arranged or how many to include. While multi-screen setups are nothing new, it has becoming far easier to achieve, afford and control them.

Complex tech made easy
Because multi-screen video walls can be complex due to the sheer amount of screens and sources involved, you’ll need the help of a skilled integrator who has experience designing and installing this type of system. Next, you want to consider how many sources to include. While you can send video from one source to multiple displays, if you want each screen in your video wall to have the capability of displaying different channels, you’ll need as many cable or satellite boxes as you have displays. For most other sources—like a Blu-ray player—one unit should suffice. After all, most people tend to watch only one movie at a given time.

We can hook you up with a video processor/switcher that acts as the middleman between your sources and displays, shuttling video here and there and making sure everything gets where you want it to go with optimal quality.

When choosing displays for your video wall—whether projections screen or flat-panel displays—consider models that have thin or nonexistent bezels for a more aesthetically pleasing look. A video wall looks more streamlined when black borders between displays are minimized—especially if you plan on mounting them close together.

Controlling your video wall
A control touch screen or tablet running a control app are the easiest ways to operate a multi-screen video wall, as opposed to a hard-button remote control. Touch screens make it easier to simply select the graphic representation of a TV and choose content for that screen or choose which screen you want to hear through the audio system. We will make controlling this sophisticated video technology as simple as a finger-press.

OK, how much?
While a high-end multi-screen setup can be expensive due to the sheer amount of gear necessary they are becoming more and more affordable. Advances in video-distribution, switching and processing technology, decreased prices for flat-panel TVs and the various intuitive control systems on the market make it easier than ever to start enjoying all your sporting events as they happen. Give us a shout and we’ll make it so that you never have to miss another touchdown!

Get the Holiday Home-Tech-Toy Hookup

The holidays mean new tech toys. And who doesn’t love a new tech toy? Whether it’s a gorgeous 65-inch TV or a sexy new wireless speaker system, technology is the perfect gift. But just like a child with a new toy and no AA batteries, a high-tech gift without the know-how to hook up and install it is the ultimate buzz kill. Don’t let your new gear collect dust. We are here to help you get your tech toys up and entertaining, safely, reliably, and quickly. Here’s how we can help.

Know what you need
Some tech toys don’t come with all the accoutrements necessary to use them right away. For example, Apple® TV doesn’t come with an HDMI cable and speaker cables are almost always sold separately. Check the box to see what’s included and what items you have to purchase separately. We are happy to help you figure it out so you can get started as soon as possible. In fact, we can make additional recommendations for accessories that will help protect your gift down the line, like a good surge protector.

Professional TV mounting a must
Nothing spoils the holidays like a shattered HDTV. So if that uncle who had too much eggnog tries to hoist your new display above the fireplace mantle, kindly tell him to step aside. In fact, we highly recommend enlisting the help of an expert. For one, we can advise you on whether your old TV mount is compatible with your new TV and if not, get you one that is. We can also help with aesthetic considerations, like flush-mounting the TV so that it is even with the wall. If this is the first time you’ve hung a TV, you’ll need help installing the proper wires—including electrical and A/V—inside the walls. Otherwise you’ll end up with unsightly cables hanging out of the TV and dragging down the aesthetic value of your media haven. Last but certainly not least, TVs are heavy and you can get hurt if you don’t know what you’re doing. Don’t risk it. Call the experts.

Audio optimization
Audio was a hot-ticket item this holiday season, with many peeling back wrapping paper to reveal a wired or wireless speaker system. Speakers, however, can be tricky to install. First, you need to put them in the right location. Second, room factors contribute to the overall sound quality of a speaker system, making even the most rudimentary calibration invaluable. Whether you received a sound bar that you want to mount below your wall-hanging LCD display, a surround system that needs to be connected to a receiver, or a wireless system that seemed plug-and-play but isn’t, we can help painlessly wire, place, hook up, and optimize your audio system.

Smartphone and tablet integration
Did you know that the iPad® your spouse gave you this season can actually be used to control your entire home? With all the available smart phone and tablet apps from satellite and cable providers, control manufacturers and other home electronics makers, we can set up your tablet or smart phone to operate everything from temperature to TV to home lighting. As an added bonus, you can do all this on your mobile device from afar, so you’re connected to your home even when you aren’t at home.

Prepare your home network
One thing is certain; the home network is now the official backbone of the home-entertainment system, with every gadget, gear and gizmo having Internet connectivity. That’s why it’s a good idea to give your network a once-over to make sure it can handle all your new ‘connected’ tech toys. Thinking About Cutting the Cable Cord?

There’s a lot of talk these days about how people are cutting the proverbial cable cord, but before you break-up with your cable or satellite partner you’ll want to do some research to make sure it’s the right decision for you and your family.

What kind of programming do you watch? An antenna will get you access to the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX). If you forego the antenna, shows are fairly accessible on the network’s website for free and through streaming subscriptions for a small fee. Sports programming is a different story and tough to find without a cable or satellite connection, especially for any game on ESPN.

How important is it that you watch it “real time” or “live?” If you can’t wait a few hours or maybe even a few days for your favorite show to become available online, cutting the cord may not be for you. Is watching your favorite team “live” a must? You might want to think twice then.

What kind of equipment is needed to get started? It depends on what kind of content you want and how you want to access it. Most importantly, if you choose a streaming option, you must make sure your home network is up to the job. You will be streaming your new content via the Internet now and the right Internet connection is key to enjoying flawless, streaming content! We can help. We can even help you calibrate your TV and surround sound system so you can be sure to get the maximum enjoyment from your new, non-cable provider! Give us a call today.

Working with Trades on a High-Tech Home Construction Project

Blueprints. Budgets. Timelines. Decisions. If you’ve ever embarked on a home remodel or new-home build, you know that it can be an exercise in patience, not to mention diplomacy. Working with all the various trades, including builders, architects and interior designers can be downright stressful. Add technology into the mix and a project can certainly become more complicated. Here are our tips to make working with trades on a high-tech new home or remodel smooth sailing.

Call us early
The number-one piece of advice you’ll hear from any electronic systems contractor (ESC) is to get them involved early on in the process, ideally at blueprint stage. There are a few reasons for this. First, technology can actually affect the structure of the house itself. For example, if your architect draws a square home theater on the blueprint and the home is actually built that way before an electronic systems contractor has a chance to offer his or her two cents, you will have some fierce acoustical problems to contend with. (Rectangular home theaters are much more beneficial for room acoustics.) Second, it’s infinitely easier, and therefore less costly, to install the appropriate wires before walls have been erected.

Make your goals known to all trades
One of the biggest challenges on high-tech home projects is that technology and design have traditionally been at odds. Architects and designers usually want technology to be completely hidden, which is not always possible. That being said, there are ample design-oriented solutions on the market. The most important thing for you as a homeowner to do is make your objectives crystal-clear. For example, some homeowners want performance first and foremost, preferring equipment to be exposed over sacrificing quality. Others agree with designers and want gear and controls to remain out of sight. Still others want something in between. By stating your preferences and making them known to all the contractors, you’ll eliminate any conflict between trades and avoid potential change orders, which can be costly.

Choose trusted partners
If you are working with true professionals, your high-tech home project should go smoothly. Many architects and interior designers have long-standing relationships with electronic systems contractors they trust, and vice versa. If you know technology is going to play a big role in a future home project or remodel, this is something worth considering.

Look for industry certifications
Many trades are required to get continuing education credits so that they can stay up-to-the-minute on the latest industry trends. Members of organizations like the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) can take hundreds of different courses on high-tech homes. Look for these credentials and ask if your potential contractors have experience designing and/or building a high-tech home.

In the end, all the trades have one thing in common–making the homeowner happy. To get started on your own high-tech home build or remodel, give us a call or come in today.

Trending Now: The Buzz from the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show

Window-cleaning suction robots, speakers made out of clear acrylic glass, flying smart phone-controlled drones and smart beds that know your sleep patterns–the yearly International Consumer Electronics Show (CES®) in Las Vegas is certainly something to behold, and this year was no exception. Energy was high and show-goers seemed genuinely excited by the boggling array of technology on display. For those of you who didn’t make it, here are the exciting trends we saw in home technology.

#1: Gorgeous 4K dominates CES
Whether you call it 4K, Ultra HDTV or UHD, this technology was the un-debated star of the show. If you aren’t familiar with it, 4K is higher-than-high-def at 3840 x 2160 pixels–four times the resolution of HDTV. The picture quality on a good 4K can be mind-blowingly good with incredible color and detail. Last year, 4K technology was in its infancy; it was prohibitively expensive and content was limited. This year, there are at least five or six manufacturers displaying 50-inch 4K TVs for less than $1,000! This is definitely a good sign for you, the homeowner, as prices continue to fall. 4K TVs got bigger, too, with one manufacturer showing a whopping 110-inch model. Meanwhile, curved TV screens continue to be a big push for manufacturers, giving consumers a more immersive IMAX-like experience.

Aside from the TVs, there was plenty of buzz about 4K content. 4K streaming will be huge, with Netflix (which is shooting the Kevin Spacey hit “House of Cards” in 4K), Amazon and Comcast® pledging their allegiance to streaming 4K. Shortly after the show, the Blu-ray Disc Association reported that 4K Blu-ray discs™ could be a reality by the end of the year. Finally, if you want to make your own 4K content, a couple of major manufacturers announced Ultra High-def camcorders so you can! Get your 4K set now or call for a demo so you can see it for yourself.

#2: The Smart home frenzy
Never have we seen so many companies vying for position in the up-and-coming market of smart home technology. The proliferation of smart phones and tablets coupled with network-connected devices are the driving factors. While there were a couple of comprehensive solutions, the problem with the new wave of smart-home technology is that every system (lights, shades, temperature) has a separate app. This means you’d have to open and close several apps to perform a series of functions. While these solutions are not bad for the DIY-er, nothing beats the reliability of a comprehensive and fully customized Savant control system installed by a professional.

#3: Geofencing
Geofencing is not a product, but a technology, one that was ever-present at CES. Using your smart device, like an iPhone®, various other devices can sense when you approach your home and perform a series of tasks accordingly. For example, if you are within a two mile radius, your home can sense your smart device, and perform a series of tasks to welcome you home. For example, the door is unlocked, the temperature is adjusted and the lights go on, all without you even having to get out your keys. Very cool.

#4: Solutions-oriented, high-quality audio
While audio tended toward the portable Bluetooth® variety at this year’s CES, we saw a lot of speakers created to answer specific design challenges in the home. For example, that clear speaker we mentioned earlier looks great on a bookshelf, because it doesn’t obstruct the view of your art, artifacts or books. All-in-one units, like sound bars and sound bases (designed to go under your TV) were still a big hit, with a couple manufacturers showing a combination sound base/Blu-ray player. Growth in the multi-room wireless audio category continues, with announcements from several big-name consumer electronics companies.

We had a chance to check out some of the higher-end speakers and components at The Venetian® down the street from the main show, and there were some truly great-sounding floorstanding speaker systems, proving that true surround sound is not a thing of the past, and really, the only way to go for immersive home theater sound. Finally, a big thumbs up to the Hi-res audio format, which offers the highest quality digital sound for an experience that rivals your analog turntable. If quality matters to you, you need to demo this technology.

These were just a few of the hot trends at 2014 CES, in addition to others–like a resurgence in PC gaming, virtual reality, and wireless LED lighting. No matter if you are looking for the best possible picture with Ultra HD TV, the latest in design-oriented audio or true smart-home technology, 2014 promises to be an unbelievable year for home electronics. We’d love you to drop by or call to see some of the most exciting products we’ve seen out of CES in a long, long ti

How To Choose the Best Home Automation System

$

Home automation is the next frontier for many homeowners. A few years ago, most of the systems on the market were difficult to use, expensive and designed mainly for very large homes. But today’s systems are much easier to operate, cost effective and can be designed to control a home entertainment system or the electronic components of an entire home. Through a smartphone, you can remotely control your home from anywhere and decrease home energy costs while doing so.

Flexibility

The main feature you’ll want in a home automation system is flexibility. Higher-end systems are designed to work seamlessly with most of the major electronics you own – home theater, surveillance cameras, security, climate control systems, appliances and more – and are constantly updated to work with new components. Robust automation systems, from companies such as Savant, produce apps with elegant interfaces that can be accessed over a smartphone or tablet. Home automation solutions from Lutron, for example, work well with security systems from a variety of manufacturers to tightly integrate automation features with systems you might already own.

Control

Homeowners install automation systems for a variety of reasons, but most of them are based on convenience and cost savings. Homeowners can save money by adjusting the temperature of their homes, remotely control lights, activate home security, and other uses. It pays to install a high-end system. Those on the low end tend to cut corners by leaving out the more granular control needed to optimize the most important elements of home automation.

Variety

Low-end systems are designed to handle the very basic controls. But most homeowners aren’t just looking for a light switch on their keychain. They want to be able to control motorized blinds, air conditioning and heating, and home security, not just in their primary homes but also in secondary homes, all with the same system. High-end systems are designed for comprehensiveness and longevity, while low-end systems are more for basic, short-term needs.

Comprehensive Control Made Easy

Low-end systems just can’t do everything you want. Homeowners often find themselves cobbling together a system with a smart thermostat from one company, intelligent lighting from another, home monitoring from a third. They wind up with a mess of sensors, apps, and tools, none of which work together or even communicate with each other. High-end systems include everything you need in one package and can easily expand with your needs.

Communication

Low-end systems cut corners on technology and software, so your “smart” home is a bit dumber than it should be. A system from Savant, for example, will intuitively understand that you want your home a certain temperature and communicate that command to all related components, such as the thermostat and blinds, saving you money and lessening the strain on your climate control system.

Home automation is about tying in all of your electronic components, ensuring that the right ones communicate with each other at the right time. With a high-end home automation system, you’ll know that you’re getting the smart home that has graduated to the next class in convenience and cost savings.

We report on outdoor A/V nearly every spring. That’s because the trend gets stronger and stronger every year as homeowners increasingly want to spend time outdoors, as evidenced by every consumer electronics magazine under the sun devoting entire issues to the concept. Best practices for outdoor A/V remains largely unchanged with the exception of a few fun trends. Here are 18 tips and tricks, however, for getting your space ready, not to mention creating an out-of-this-house A/V experience.

1. Wireless audio is your new BFF. While we always prefer a hardwired connection for audio quality, wireless home audio systems are great for getting music outside, without a lot of planning or structural wiring.

2. The more outdoor speakers, the better. For those purists who want to get the best sound, we suggest more speakers dispersed throughout your patio or backyard for even coverage aimed toward the home so that you won’t annoy the neighbors.

3. Create fun playlists. Without tunes to liven things up, it’s not really a party at all.

4. Plan for permanent fixtures. It’s important to plan for permanent outdoor electronics. For example, you need to install pool speakers before the concrete is poured, and conduit will need to be run to any permanent outdoor video displays.

5. Look for speakers that blend in. Compact speakers designed with flexible mounting options are increasingly popular because you can place them in trees, bushes or virtually anywhere.

6. Involve us from the beginning and wire for more speakers than you need. You may decide later on that you want more!

7. Allocate the proper space for in-ground subwoofers, which produce great bass outdoors.

8. Invest in a waterproof, rugged iPad cover or remote for outdoor control.

9. Never use indoor gear outdoors. You can’t simply take your TV outside, install it and expect it to hold up to the elements.

10. Run video wiring to several different locations so that you can put video in one or more spots should you decide to add more than one screen in the future.

11. Choose an outdoor display at the largest size so that you can put video in one or more spots should you decide to add more than one screen in the future.

12. For outdoor TVs, make sure to get a mount that includes a lock and key mechanism to prevent theft.

13. Protect your investment with outdoor security. A simple IP camera tied into your control system should do the trick.

14. Light it rightto set the mood and add to your home’s safety. We can program the right lighting for various activities, like watching TV outside, a late night dip in the pool or a soak in the hot tub.

15. Add specialty lighting to your pool(such as color-changing LED) before the water is added.

16. Add outdoor wireless access points to boost signal for continuous Wi-Fi coverage outside.

17. Wow your guests with an outdoor movie theater, complete with weatherproof screen and drop down projector. Just remember that the appropriate housing is important.

18. Add other living elements, such as a grill, wood-burning pizza oven or outdoor seating.

Follow these guidelines and we guarantee you’ll begin to enjoy your outdoor spaces more than you ever have. Plus, we’ll do all the heavy lifting. Give us a call or call us to learn more!
